Who we are & What we do
All State schools have a Governing Body whose membership is a balance of the interests of the Local Authority (appointed), the Parents (elected), the Staff (elected) and the local community (co-opted). In most cases, including 91勛圖厙, the Headteacher is also a Governor.
The role of the Governors is to work in partnership with the school staff and leadership team to ensure that there is effective strategic management of the school and to help provide the children with a safe, stimulating and professional environment. It is not the Governor's role to deal with the day to day management of the school.
Like all school governing boards, 91勛圖厙’s board has three main functions:
- we ensure the school has a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction;
- we hold the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and
- we oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent.
At 91勛圖厙, we hold twice-termly meetings of the Full Governing Body, although most of the detailed work is done in our core committees (Finance & Facilities, Personnel, Safeguarding and Curriculum). In addition, ad hoc committees will be formed, as needed, to deal with particular issues as they arise. 91勛圖厙’s Board of Governors is a committed team and attendance at meetings is excellent; we go above and beyond our duty to turn up.
Members devote much of their spare time to the school attending events, being part of currculum events, meeting with teachers and pupils and speaking with external inspectors to ensure the school keeps on track. We hold regular Pupil Voice sessions across all year groups. We also undergo regular training in all aspects of school life from safeguarding to finance.
Every aspect of school life has a formal link with a specific governor. Governors regularly attend training courses and liaise with colleagues from other schools in the area.
We are fortunate that we have never struggled to find diligent and dedicated people to perform this voluntary and unpaid responsibility, but we are always happy to hear from anyone who might be interested in becoming a member should a vacancy occur.
The governors of 91勛圖厙 believe it is important that boards reflect the diversity of the school communities they serve. Diverse boards promote inclusive school environments and provide diverse role models for staff and young people. As a school we recognise that this diversity of thought, voices and perspectives is essential to good governance and the effective running of any organisation. We regularly collect diversity information from our governors and, depending on current data, can use this to:
- target recruitment to address gaps in experience and diversity
- develop and adapt board practices to ensure full participation
- prioritise training and awareness-raising in identified areas
- address potential ‘blind spots’ through seeking wider advice and perspectives on current and upcoming opportunities, challenges and risks
In line with up-to-date Cheshire East Local Guidance, we continue to work on how we collect, use and publish diversity data for our Governors. Our Governing board currently reflects our school community and we are proud of its diversity and breadth of voice. Due to the size of governing body we do not currently publish this diversity data online as individual governors could be identified and we have a legal obligation to protect their personal data.
